It seems like a lifetime ago, that warm spring day I received my acceptance letter from Laurier’s Faculty of Arts. How excited I was to be part of this community surging with Golden Hawk spirit, a community encouraging social involvement while still offering one of the best Liberal Arts educations around.
I would have never guessed that all these years later I would be in a position to build upon and strengthen that sense of community; that I would come to lead an organization with the means and resources to make meaningful changes in the lives of my peers.
When I first applied to volunteer with CICDA in the winter of 2011 I had never even heard of the organization. I knew little about what they did, and even less about what the acronym stood for! How is it that a student finishing second year in this institution which boasts community didn’t even know he had a student’s society? Maybe ignorance on my part, but I quickly discovered that I was not alone.
My predecessors have done excellent work in developing a host of projects that have enabled our peers in the Faculty of Arts to accomplish goals that they would have otherwise only dreamt about. The grant fund has allowed students to develop leadership skills, host incredible guest speakers and events, and even travel to fascinating places around the world. Experiences unavailable in the classroom, that are invaluable to a quality Arts education.
Foundations have been laid that will enable CICDA to grow into an integral part of the Faculty of Arts student experience. I plan to bring us there.
My team and I have been busy this summer building the new website and re-creating our brand. We are starting new projects like the Undergraduate Arts Journal, and sponsoring ones like the Common Reading program. We are bringing our wide range of Arts affiliated clubs together through the Arts Club Council, and connecting them to students through this online portal. We have created a place that students can keep tabs on all the upcoming events related to the Faculty of Arts, and will do our very best to keep you updated on the information that will effect your time here at Laurier. We are an organization funded by students, for students. We are run by an awesome group of volunteers who are not afraid to stay up late, to work weekends, and to go above and beyond for the Arts student body. We invite your feedback, personal input and engagement; we are working for you, after all.
This is the year we re-establish ourselves as the Faculty of Arts Student Society. I hope you’re half as excited as I am, it will be one to remember.
